This week the question for me has been what is personal power, and why is it so important for us as individuals to have security and success in our lives?
Thus, I have set out this week to answer that very question.
If you are curious to see the answers I find, stick with me along my journey of discovery.
Step one: What is Personal Power?
When I think of personal power, I think about the power we each have in controlling our states of being, such as mindset or the ability to see from a positive perspective regardless of the situation.
I believe we are each given with time and experience, the knowledge and strength to have power over ourselves and the little piece of our world.
I believe we are given the ability to defend if necessary and share our little piece of the world with others. But, with time and experience, we can also build our power to influence others in various areas of their lives.
I do not believe that we are born with this ability, but much like any skill, it is acquired and honed over time. Therefore, as I searched for a proper definition of personal power, I came across this definition, which reflects what I believe personal power is.
Personal power is based on strength, confidence, and competence that individuals gradually acquire during their development. It is self-assertion and a natural, healthy striving for love, satisfaction, and meaning in one’s interpersonal world.
In truth, I could not have said it any better, I feel that this definition sums things up very nicely, and now that we have a better understanding of personal power, that moves on to step 2.
Step two: Why Is Personal Power So Important?
Here is a good question, why is it so important?
As I did some reach to find how to describe best to answer why personal power is so important I came across this definition, which I think answers the question up very nicely,
Personal power can be a tremendous source of mental and emotional strength that can help us work through challenges, obstacles, setbacks, problems, and adversity more effectively. It’s something that separates winners and losers in all fields of endeavor.
Basically, if you have power over how you think, feel, and respond to anything you face or go through, you are strong with personal power. Still, if you blame everyone else and are a victim of the situation, you are weak with personal power. This is the difference between being a winner and a loser in life.
People with personal power take responsibility for their circumstances. Therefore, they will not allow whatever happens to affect them so that they will not be in control of themselves.
This is why it is so essential, simply because it allows us to hold the reins and choose how we will respond or what we will do in any given situation.
With a personal power, if you want to be happy, you can be, and if you want to be content, you will be. If you want to feel safe, you will, and so forth. But, on the other hand, people nor circumstances have the power to take from you anything that can’t be replaced with something or someone better.
For those of you reading this who do not know the feeling of peace or power, how wonderful would it be to understand that no one could take from you in the ways that matter most? Won’t that just be awesome?
It was awesome for me when I discovered the feeling of everlasting peace.
As I come to my close, let me leave you with this one thought if you have not taken the time to discover your power, then I encourage you to start making the time as it will change your life and the way you live it.
If you would like to learn how to tap into your personal power and start using it to your benefit, then be sure to read next week’s blog, as I will be covering it in detail.
