Welcome back, everyone, this week, I thought I would discuss the best ways to deal with adversity and stress when the situation arises in your life.
I have never done an article on stress or the best practices for resolving the trigger behind stress before things get out of hand, so today, I thought I would discuss the best practices when or if the situation arises.
Below I will give you some of the best practices I know and have researched for this article. If you would like to try some of these practices in your stress management, please stay with me as I explain these practices in detail below.
What Is Stress?
In my research, this was the best definition I could find to explain the meaning of stress. This definition defines Stress as the “psychological, and behavioral response by an individual when they perceive a lack of balance between the demands placed upon them and their ability to meet those demands, which, over some time, leads to poor health.”
It’s important to note that not all stress is bad; you have to remember that the stress responses are natural and can be helpful, provided you do not put them entirely in the driver’s seat and give into the reaction of fear and panic.
What Is Adversity?
It is defined as difficulties or misfortune if you look it up in the dictionary. Still, according to another source, it is described in more detail, stating that; Adversity can be anything and come up at any time, just as it can touch anyone at some point in life. It can be a temporary thing like a natural disaster, dealing with a break-up or concerns about money, or something long-lasting like a physical disability or poverty.
Adversity can come from an outside source (for example, prejudice or bullying) or from within (such as struggling with depression or anxiety). In addition, adversity can come from difficult people you love or don’t know.
It is important to note that most stress is caused by adversity in your life, and with the right strategies and techniques, your response to the stress and adversity can be controlled and managed well.
The techniques I will list below will help no matter how the stress or adversity in your life is caused.
Techniques that you can use to help you cope:
- Understand Your Stress: Although everyone feels and deals with stress/ adversity, it does not look or feel the same for everyone. Therefore, you should understand what it looks and feels like to you; this way, you will know if specific techniques or exercises need to be used.
- Learn to identify the signals: If you can see them, you will be better able to stop things before they get out of hand.
- Identify the source: by identifying the origin or the trigger, you will be able to come up with solutions to prevent the trigger from going off or find ways to avoid those sources or stressors.
- Make your self-care a priority: when you prioritize your care and needs a priority, you will be more mindful of your needs and will act when the time is required.
- First, recognize the strategies that work for you: by understanding what does or does not work for you, you will be far better at taking the next step, which is to,
- Implement stress strategies: by being able to implement your stress strategies, you will always be able to keep things in check for yourself and handle any situation that may arise with a calm and relaxed mindset.
- Ask for help if needed: we can not always do things independently, and there is nothing wrong with asking for assistance if required. Be sure you have trusted and supportive people you can reach out to in these moments of need.
