Welcome back, everyone, this week, I thought we could discuss the twelve most common limiting beliefs. We have handed down those beliefs from generation to generation since the dawn of time.

When all these lessons and polite rules of behavior started, they were meant to serve good. Still, I thought we could look a little deeper and see just how much good they have served over time and what part they have played in helping create some of the ways we see ourselves and how we might interact with others.

Jumping in

As a child, we’re taught certain things which will prepare us for polite society. They are basic rules and guidelines that govern our behavior toward others or around others. Still, for all the good they were meant to serve, they seem to do more harm if you look at them from a different perspective.

Below you will find a list of the twelve most common limiting beliefs passed down from one generation to the other.

List Of Limiting Beliefs

  1. Money is the root of all evil. It is the root of all evil. The conditioned fear can cause a negative association with having lots of money, and you might unconsciously avoid or sabotage financial success. The potential limatation. You could fear becoming too wealthy or believe that having too much money would make you evil.
  2. You must always finish the food on your plate. The good intention here is not to be wasteful with food. The conditioned fear could be a fear of food scarcity or guilt for having more than others. The potential limitations can cause overeating, health problems, or holding yourself back to avoid feeling guilt over having more than others. 
  3.  Money doesn’t grow on trees. The good intention is being intelligent with how you spend your money. The conditioned fear can cause fear of not having enough money or believing it’s hard to get. The potential limitation  Is the belief that you can’t have what you want if it involves having money. 
  4. Don’t burn your bridges. The good intention good relationships with people who may one day be a helpful resource. The conditioned fear can cause every apprehensive about doing what you know is right for you if you feel like you’ll be judged. The potential limits of not making a change or taking an opportunity when it comes out of fear of the disappointment of others.
  5. No pain, no gain. The good intention is that pain is worth the struggle. The potential fear that you will have to feel the pain to find success. The potential limit: Be afraid to make changes or go for what you want because it will be painful.
  6. Life is hard. The good intention is pain and struggle or a normal part of being human.  The condition fears there is no hope or happiness in life. The potential limit is feeling discouraged or helpless because you will always have unneeded suffering. After all, it’s typical or expected. 
  7. Honor thy mother and father. The good intention here is to treat your parents respectfully and be grateful for them. The conditioned fear of being overly concerned about disappointing your parents vs. following your heart, The potential limit you can hold yourself back from what you want or who you are just because your parents or others don’t approve. 
  8. No one ever said life was fair. The good intention is sometimes things seem unfair, but it is okay. The conditioned fear here is you won’t get what you deserve and there is no justice in the world. You could hold yourself back from the potential limit because you believe it will not pay off in the end and end up experiencing homelessness.
  9. Good things come to those who wait. Good intention is essential to be patient, and it’s worth the wait. The conditioned fear is that you must wait longer to get what you want. The potential limitation is that you will do what you have to rather than what you want because it could take too long.
  10. You have to pay dues. The good intention is that it takes effort to get results. The conditioned fear is you must suffer to get the payoff. The potential limitation is that you might feel like punishing yourself for accomplishments. 
  11. Speak only when spoken to. The good intention is to be polite and doesn’t interrupt. The conditioned fear is that you could be too nervous about approaching others or speaking up for yourself—the potential limit. You may pass up a position as a leader, not stand up for what you want or for yourself or fear public speaking. 
  12. Children are meant to be seen and not heard. This applies to older generations especially, and there is no good intention here.  This has only left children feeling unloved and unvalued as human beings. Children who grow up in this kind of environment tend to have low self-esteem and low confidence level. They also fear speaking up for themselves or that they feel unseen by society as a whole.

How To Reword and change your mindset

Our words have real power and how we use them is very important. They are also a reflection of our thoughts and feelings and will determine our outcomes. If you find that your outcomes are less than what you desired, it might be worth your time to examine how you feel and think.

If you find that you are more negative than positive, here are three ways you can flip things around yourself.

  • Change “ I have to” into “ I get to”  by doing this, you are giving yourself a choice along with flipping a negative outlook to a positive one.
  • Change “I can’t”  into “How can I”  by doing this, you are flipping a limiting belief into a can-do question.
  • Change “ I might” into “ I will” by doing this, you will eliminate the doubt and create confidence in all you want to do.

You should always aim to think positively. The more positive you are, the more positive you will find your outcomes to be as well.
