Welcome back, everyone. This week’s newsletter will be about how to create a healthy and productive way of communicating with others. I have discussed this subject before and would like to re-approach the topic with some tips on becoming the most effective communicator possible.
Communication is vital to building healthy and positive relationships. When mastered, it dramatically benefits one in all areas of life. So, if you are interested in building your communication skills, I invite you to take this next step toward becoming positively improved with me.
Identify what it is that you want to accomplish
The first step in building communication skills is establishing what you want to accomplish with the conversation you will have. A way to do this is to ask yourself a few questions, such as:
1. What needs am I trying to meet?
2. What do I want the other person to know or understand?
3. How can I say it in a way they will most likely hear?
Once these questions are answered, you will have a sound direction for the conversation you want. It is important to remember that you have a goal to accomplish and want to be the most effective that you can be; this needs to be the heart of each of the questions you will be asking yourself.
Activity listen
So many people have yet to learn how to actively listen when they are bombarded with consistent demands. However, to communicate effectively you have to be proficient in the skill of listening. This means that you need to listen with all of you. You need to listen with your heart to hear what the other person says.
You also need to listen with your eyes by observing the body language of the person talking, as it is just as much about communicating as their words. You will also need to listen with your mind, as there are usually things hidden beneath the surface of what is being said that can be revealed when you are an effective listener. It seems like a lot, and at first, it is, but with time and practice, it becomes second nature.
Know you audience
Now, it helps when you know who you are talking to simply because you can personalize the conversation, which makes it far more productive.
This is why people always encourage you to know your audience. In business, you can personalize the message and the same can be said even when it comes to private personal conversations as well.
Pace yourself
Another important part of effective communication is listening and clearly and respectfully explaining your thoughts on the matter or situation. It is vital that you take all the time needed to make sure that both people are heard and completely understood.
This means that timing is also an essential aspect of effective communication. You should always plan a time to have serious or sensitive conversations in advance to allow for the time required for a productive and successful conversation.

This is a short but to-the-point newsletter on how to improve your communication skills. I invite you to try these methods to help you improve your skills in this area if only to see how effective they are.
